General Guidelines for ALL categories:
- All requested information (name, loglines, contact information, etc.) and additional materials (if applicable, logline and screenshots) must be submitted in accordance with the specified rules on the online submission form. If the application is incomplete or materials are not submitted by the deadline, the project will be disqualified.
- Applicants must only submit ONE project per category, and may not submit to more than TWO categories per festival year.
- Applicants may not submit the same project to multiple categories.
- While you are welcome to submit films that have not been fully completed (coloring, minor sound adjustments needed, etc.) we strongly discourage this.
- Projects submitted to the Fusion Film Festival in previous years are NOT eligible.
- Students or Alumni with professional representation (e.g. an Agent/Manager) are ineligible to submit.
- Please note that in the event of a lack of submissions to any category, we may need to disqualify the category from our festival for the year.
- FUSION Film Festival is an educational festival offered exclusively within New York University Tisch School of the Arts accepting submissions ONLY from current NYU students and alumni who have graduated within the past 3 years. Work screened at Fusion does not constitute an official Premiere of any kind.
Undergraduate Film Guidelines:
The Undergraduate Film category is open to all films created during the Undergraduate career. However, please note that the majority of films submitted to this category are created in Intermediate and Advanced level production classes.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER
- Time limit: 15 minutes including title and credits.
Graduate Film Guidelines:
The Graduate Film category is open to all films created during the Graduate career.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER
- Time limit: 15 minutes including title and credits.
Documentary Film Guidelines:
The Documentary Film category is open to all documentaries created by Undergraduate and Graduate students. Sight and Sound Documentary films are also encouraged to be submitted in this category.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER
- Time limit: 15 minutes including title and credits.
Web Series Guidelines:
The Web Series category is open to short episodic series created by students. Please submit just ONE EPISODE of your series, preferably the pilot episode. We especially encourage the submission of projects created in the Intermediate TV Bootcamp class.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER (or CREATOR/SHOWRUNNER for Web Series only)
- Time limit: 6 minutes
Animation Guidelines:
The Animation category is open to animated films created by both Undergraduate and Graduate students.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER
Time limit: 10 minutes
Rising Star Guidelines:
The Rising Star honor is awarded to an up-and-coming female student in the Film and Television program. Projects created in the Frame & Sequence, Intro to Animation, and Sound Image classes will be accepted.
- Must be a current NYU freshman.
- Submission must have a FEMALE DIRECTOR.
- Time limit:
- Frame & Sequence: 5 minutes
- Animation: 6 minutes
- Sound Image: 8 minutes
Sight & Sound Guidelines:
The Sight & Sound category is open to projects created in Sight & Sound Filmmaking or Studio. Please note that most students tend to submit their FINAL projects of the class to this category. Please submit Sight & Sound Documentary projects in the Documentary Film category.
- Must be a current undergraduate student.
- Must be a project created during or after the semester of Spring 2018.
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER.
- Time limit: 8 minutes including title and credits.
Docs in the Works Guidelines:
The Docs in the Works category provides documentary filmmakers with the opportunity to receive mentorship from filmmaker Sam Pollard and to pitch their work-in-progress to industry professionals. To submit to this category you must provide a written proposal and a short trailer for your documentary.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have ONE of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CINEMATOGRAPHER, or EDITOR
- Must be a work-in-progress and NOT a completed project.
- Must be beyond the research stage.
- The finished film must be at least 30 minutes in length.
- Director MUST be able to pitch the project in person and attend several workshops & rehearsals three weeks before the festival event on Friday, April 5, 2019.
- Time limit (for trailer): 3-5 minutes
- Written proposal should contain: Title of the project, Logline, Treatment that describes the story structure and narrative trajectory, or potential central character arcs for the project. Discuss your access to the story and characters. Describe why this topic is important, timely or relevant. Detail the topics, issues, challenges, stakes, or questions your project will cover. List project status and all the production crew.
Music Video Guidelines:
The Music Video category is open to music videos created by both Undergraduate and Graduate students, or Alumni. We especially encourage the submission of projects created in the Short Commercial Form class. Please remember that Students or Alumni with professional representation (e.g. an Agent/Manager) are ineligible to submit.
- Must be a current NYU student or recent alumni (2016-2018)
- Must have one of the following positions fulfilled by a female: DIRECTOR, CO-DIRECTOR, or CINEMATOGRAPHER
- Time limit: 7 minutes
All Screenplay & Pilot Guidelines:
The writing categories are split by Graduate and Undergraduate, and are separate into Feature Screenplay, One-Hour Pilot, and Half-Hour Pilot categories.

- Must be FEMALE WRITER or CO-WRITER
- Page limit:
- 120 pages (Feature Screenplay)
- 65 pages (One-Hour Pilot)
- 35 pages (Half-Hour Pilot)
